ImmunohistochemistryDown-regulation-PTEN may have potential as a prognostic marker in human CRC.

CRCs with a low expression or deletion of PTEN may progress towards invasion and even metastasis.

ImmunohistochemistryDown-regulation-Reduced PTEN expression and MMP-7 over-expression may play important roles in the pathogenesis of colorectal cancer.

Combined detection may provide prognostic benefit towards colorectal cancer.

-Down-regulation-MiR-21 targets PTEN at the post-transcriptional level and regulates cell proliferation and invasion in CRC. It may serve as a novel therapeutic target in CRC.

The PTEN protein levels in CRC tissues and cells had an inverse correlation with miR-21 expression.

miR-21 was overexpressed in CRC compared with adenomas and normal tissues.

Gene Type protein coding
Gene Family Protein tyrosine phosphatases / Class I Cys-based PTPs : PTENs
Description This gene was identified as a tumor suppressor that is mutated in a large number of cancers at high frequency. The protein encoded this gene is a phosphatidylinositol-3,4,5-trisphosphate 3-phosphatase. It contains a tensin like domain as well as a catalytic domain similar to that of the dual specificity protein tyrosine phosphatases. Unlike most of the protein tyrosine phosphatases, this protein preferentially dephosphorylates phosphoinositide substrates. It negatively regulates intracellular levels of phosphatidylinositol-3,4,5-trisphosphate in cells and functions as a tumor suppressor by negatively regulating AKT/PKB signaling pathway.
