| 22999059    | 2013 | Cell line : - Source : Portuguese Institute of Oncology, Porto (IPOP) and Coimbra (IPOC). Sample Type : CRC tumor and normal tissue No. of Sample : 471 participants: 193 histologically confirmed CRC patients and 278 cancer-free controls Stage : - | polymorphisms genotyping, RT-PCR | Polymorhpism | - | The CC genotype of the TLR2??>C SNP was associated with 5-fold decreased risk of CRC development (OR = 0.21), which is a remarkable result for a SNP. LR2??>C and TLR4 Asp299Gly SNPs significantly influence the risk of CRC development, suggesting that these TLRs SNPs may be genetic susceptibility markers for CRC. |

| Description | The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the Toll-like receptor (TLR) family which plays a fundamental role in pathogen recognition and activation of innate immunity. TLRs are highly conserved from Drosophila to humans and share structural and functional similarities. They recognize pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) that are expressed on infectious agents, and mediate the production of cytokines necessary for the development of effective immunity. The various TLRs exhibit different patterns of expression. This gene is expressed most abundantly in peripheral blood leukocytes, and mediates host response to Gram-positive bacteria and yeast via stimulation of NF-kappaB. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]   |
