Homozygotes for IL4 -588C>T or for Ex1-168G>A showed an increased risk for colon cancer. |

The analyses were performed on genomic DNA from 308 Swedish CRC cases together with 585 controls. Blood samples collected from an ethnically homogenous population living in a geographically defined region in North Sweden. |

Sample Type : - No. of Sample : 607 consecutive newly diagnosed colorectal cancer patients and controls Stage : - | - | Unknown | - | Protection from apoptosis is achieved by autocrine production of interleukin-4 (IL-4) through up-regulation of anti-apoptotic mediators. IL-4, through activation of the STAT-6 signaling pathway, is involved in survivin expression levels as well as its localization. |
| 11915173    | 2002 | Cell line : - Source : Population of North Sweden. Sample Type : Blood Sample No. of Sample : 308 Swedish CRC cases and 585 controls Stage : - | - | Up-regulation | - | Levels of IL4, sIL2R, IL8 and IL7 were found to be significant in peripheral blood and would therefore be of use in defining diagnostic and prognostic indices for disease progression. When serum levels of sIL2R < 522 U/ml, IL4 < 159 pg/ml and IL8 > 339 pg/ml there is a 95% probability that the disease is in stage I or II where there is no infiltration of lymph nodes; when serum levels of sIL2R > or = 522 Ug/ml, 159 pg/ml < or = IL4 < or = 319 pg/ml, and IL7 < 54 pg/ml, there is a 95% probability that the disease is in stage III and the tumor has invaded the lymph nodes; when the serum levels of IL4 > or = 431 pg/ml and IL7 > or = 54 pg/ml, there is a 95% probability that the disease is in stage IV and there is metastasis. |

| Gene Family | Interleukins and interleukin receptors |
| Description | The protein encoded by this gene is a pleiotropic cytokine produced by activated T cells. This cytokine is a ligand for interleukin 4 receptor. The interleukin 4 receptor also binds to IL13, which may contribute to many overlapping functions of this cytokine and IL13. STAT6, a signal transducer and activator of transcription, has been shown to play a central role in mediating the immune regulatory signal of this cytokine. This gene, IL3, IL5, IL13, and CSF2 form a cytokine gene cluster on chromosome 5q, with this gene particularly close to IL13. This gene, IL13 and IL5 are found to be regulated coordinately by several long-range regulatory elements in an over 120 kilobase range on the chromosome. Two alternatively spliced transcript variants of this gene encoding distinct isoforms have been reported. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]   | Chromosome | 5 |
